The interiors of the new two, three and four bedroomed boutique barns have been masterminded by the Notting Hill based designers at House Nine, creators of stylish and timeless living spaces across London, the UK and abroad.
Jojo Barr, Founder of House Nine Design, was commissioned in 2017 to provide the interior planning and styling for Aria Resort’s hotly anticipated Gara Rock Hotel complete refurb near Salcombe in the South Hams, Devon. Much lauded by every travel critic going, her luxurious design for the far-flung, sprawling clifftop destination has won ongoing praise. So, it was only natural that the Aria team would turn to Jojo and House Nine for the development of their UK first ‘boutique barns’ at flagship five-star resort Retallack, set in the heart of Cornwall.
Jojo says, “Retallack Resort & Spa is already the ultimate Cornish location. Nestled in the core of the county, it has all the same elemental, country-lakeside ‘sexiness’ and tranquillity combo of Soho Farmhouse and yet it’s just minutes away from some of the most stunning beaches and clifftops in the country. It’s also close to the some of the UK’s very best stylish bars, restaurants and attractions.”
Jojo continues, “Cornwall is a very hip destination and Aria’s brief of turning ‘holiday home interiors on its head’ in collaboration with the beautiful, natural, dark Scandi architectural exterior design of the new boutique barns, couldn’t have inspired us more! By day or night, the interior design, architectural exteriors and landscaping, the lakeside or calming countryside settings and backdrops are all in constant symbiosis, with twinkling stars, singing birds and ebbing water sounds. So we wanted to offset this idyllic location with a new type of Cornish vacation design and styling.”
As a result, Jojo and her team have created a calming aesthetic for the barns, decorated in soft palettes, natural textures and soft lighting. The architectural design ensures that plentiful light shines in throughout the year and the location, perched right on the bank of Retallack lakes, or across the surrounding countryside, means that the boutique barns provide the ultimate escapism for all with lots to explore and enjoy.
The two, three- and four-bedroom boutique barns all have open plan dining and living areas, providing ample breathing space and playful or lounging areas which are brought together with earthy combinations of timber wood panelling, blended with natural carpets and soft furnishings. The calming design aesthetic fuses together the interior with the breath-taking scenery outside.
Soft down lighting with bulk head lights add character and a soft glow throughout the barns with large pendants hanging in the main living spaces and bedrooms. With occasional highlights of blue and green textiles, combined with soft tonal colours throughout the bedrooms, and with natural carpets in place for luxury and comfort.
Encaustic patterned tiles add a splash of colour and a playful style to the bathroom, with enough space to welcome a few, wet sandy feet. The Crittall bath panel doors stylishly separate the wet and drying areas without disrupting the light or style. Sliding doors open up onto sun drenched terraces, and stunning views, welcoming barefoot adventurers looking to rest in the fresh Cornish breeze or soak in the outdoor hot tubs or external baths.
Jojo Barr says, “Our resultant Retallack design, and the experience it provides, is inspired by the shades, textures, light and elemental nature of Retallack’s stunning setting, combined with the new holiday home owners’ aspiration for a new kind of luxury that is immediately in tune with them in holiday mode, but is neither too simple or too opulent. Taking inspiration from small countryside cabins and boutique hotels and gastropubs, each home is a home first and foremost. All the special details ensure that each barn is unique and special in its own way, as well as a world away from what anyone would expect from a typical Cornish ‘seaside holiday home.’ The results really are the epitome of a new wave of countryside comfort and cool, with extra lashings of style.”
Retallack Resort & Spa is perfectly geographically located in the Cornish countryside near Wadebridge and in picturesque North Cornwall, close to Padstow and Newquay. With direct flights from all main UK airports into nearby Newquay, and easy transport access, Retallack Resort & Spa is tucked away enough for a blissful retreat, accessible for adventurers and offers tranquillity for travellers exploring Cornwall in all seasons.
